40 Healthy habits to adopt... healthy lifestyles to start now...

Hi Dassyb blog readers, hope you are having a good week because I am so far. Today am writing about various health habits to adopt. Bad habits are easy. They have a way of becoming part of your life quickly and sticking around for the long haul. Luckily, good habits are easy, too . No, seriously. Once it becomes part of your life, you won’t notice it, or find it difficult. Today I’m sharing some easy healthy habits you can incorporate into your life. They are listed below.

1. Take the stairs instead of elevators or escalators. Anytime you have an opportunity to add in a couple of minutes of extra activity, go for it!

2. Move every hour. Sitting for long periods of time is not what humans are meant to do – set an alarm if you have to, but get up and move around every hour.

3. Walk more. There are so many ways to add extra steps to your day. Next time you’re about to get in your car to run an errand, ask yourself if it’s close enough to walk instead. Try parking further away from your destination. Get off your bus or train a stop early and walk the last part of your commute.

4. Incorporate exercise on purpose into your routine. Walking more and taking the stairs are great, but actually planned exercise is vital to good health. Aim to do whatever you can to start, with a goal of a minimum of 30 minutes every day.

5. Go for whole foods over processed whenever you can. The fewer ingredients, the better, when it comes to anything in a package. If you can’t pronounce it, do you really want to eat it?

6. Drink water. Carry a refillable bottle with you and keep an eye on how much you’re actually drinking during the day. How much water should you drink? It’s different for everyone , but a good rule of thumb is the pee test – if your urine is pale yellow, you’re probably adequately hydrated.

7. Incorporate vegetables into every meal. Even if it’s tomato on your sandwich, make it your mission to add more veggies every time you eat. Not sure how to do that for breakfast? Think omelets, green juice, smoothies. You can even try healthy muffin and bread recipes using zucchini or carrots.

8. Eat more fruit. Have fruit as snacks, or as a healthy dessert. Try eating fruit of every color to get all of the micronutrients and antioxidants available.

9. Stop avoiding fat. Fat is awesome. Fat keeps you feeling full. Fat is necessary for your survival. Don’t eat fat-free everything – in fact, maybe don’t eat fat-free anything! Nuts, avocados, healthy oils, dairy can all be great sources of fat in your diet.

10. Cook more. Cooking at home is healthier, since you’re in control of what you put in your food and how it’s prepared.

11. Eat more omega-3s, which can help prevent cardiovascular disease. Great sources include oily fish, like salmon and sardines, walnuts, flax seeds and soybeans.

12. Read food labels. Get familiar with sneaky labeling, like ‘partially hydrogenated vegetable oil’, which actually means trans fats.

13. Limit your alcohol consumption. If you’re a drinker, keep a log of all the alcohol you drink in a week, then see where you can cut back. Try drinks that take you a longer time to drink, as well as alternating alcoholic with non-alcoholic drinks.

14. Track how many calories you’re taking in from beverages. Calories from juice, soda, milk and alcohol all add up, sometimes to a significant amount.

15. Don’t skip meals. It messes with your blood sugar. Try to plan ahead whenever you can with snacks, if you know you’re going to find it hard to have a meal.

16. Focus on one bad habit at a time. One of the simplest ways to jumpstart good health is to start by replacing just one bad habit. For example, if you’re an all-day coffee drinker, make today the day you cut back. Try these 4 Tips for Java Junkies – How to Avoid Caffeine Withdrawal. Or if you typically surf the web after lunch, shut off that glowing screen and take a quick walk before you need to get back on the clock. Don’t wait until tomorrow. Start today.

17.Learn to love sleep. Feeling fatigued makes it easy to give in to weight-busting bad habits, like mindless snacking. Proper sleep helps the body produce hormones that regulate hunger and feelings of fullness. Most adults need between 7.5 to 9 hours a night. Switch off the TV or smartphone and invest in feeling good—go to bed earlier tonight.

18. Travel as much as you can. Expose yourselves to other cultures, ways of thinking and living, different religions and world views.

19. De-clutter. Learn to live with less things – most of the things you live with you have no use for anyway. Every material possession in your life is something you think about, or worry about losing or breaking, so get rid of it before it stresses you out.

20. Set goals and work towards attaining them. Sometimes it’s the working towards the goals where the magic happens.

21. Use to-do lists. Taking time to map out your priorities and what you need to get done gives you a sense of control.

22. Watch less TV. I would say this one is hard for o 80% of the population. I get it, it’s an easy and relatively cheap way to relax. I marathon-watched Breaking Bad. But do you find yourself watching TV mindlessly, not even really caring about what’s on? Pick what you really want to watch and make a pact to turn the TV off at other times.

23. Give to others. If you don’t have enough money to give to charity, that’s okay. Give away your expertise, or your time volunteering.

24. Try meditation. If this sounds too new-age for you, just rephrase it for yourself and think of it as taking a few minutes to yourself to just breathe and unplug from everything around you. Don’t sweat the details, or think of meditation as having to follow strict rules for breathing and chants.

25. Don’t beat yourself up when you experience failure (real or perceived). Learning from a mistake is a good thing – dwelling on it and making yourself feel bad is unproductive. Accept it, figure out what you could have done to change it, then move on.

26. Don’t forget your brain needs exercise, too. Read books, do crosswords or other brain games, memorize something.

27. Quit smoking. If you haven’t quit smoking yet, maybe you haven’t tried one method that will work for you – acupuncture, hypnosis, cold turkey, patches, electronic cigarettes, medication, nicotine gum.

28. Enjoy the moment. Find and focus on one thing in your environment you can enjoy, even if you’re doing something that irritates you, like waiting in line.

29. Laugh. Have a favorite comedian? Look up their clips on YouTube. Call someone who makes you laugh. Read The Onion. Whatever makes you smile – it’s good for your soul.

30. Write down what you’re grateful for. What is in your life right now that you’re thankful about? Seeing it written down in black and white is a powerful reminder of how lucky you are. This is also a great way to feel blessed when you’re in the middle of a pity party.

31. Switch off occasionally. Leave your phone behind. Don’t use the internet for a day. Try to break complete reliance on technology every now and again.

32. Learn to say no occasionally. You don’t have to accept every invitation, or feel obliged to do every favor you’re asked. If you don’t have time, or you think something will add to your stress level, it’s okay to politely refuse.

33. Ask for and accept help when you need it.

34.Make plans with friends and keep them! Socializing is important for your well-being and can help you de-stress. You know that friend you’ve been meaning to reach out to forever? Just do it. Email, text, call, FaceTime, whatever your method of communication, you’ll feel good for getting in touch.

35. Listen to your favorite music, go out of your way to look at something you find beautiful (I even plan my commute around favorite buildings and views) and help shape your environment to make it easier to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

36. Smile at people, even if they don’t smile back.

37. Do what you love, in every area of your life. If you’re in a job you hate, start making plans to extricate yourself. Find the workout you love, so you’ll be sure to keep doing it. Practice hobbies you love, just because you love them. Fill your life with what you enjoy.

38. Tell the people you love that you love them!

39. Stop all negative self talk–Catch yourself mid-thought and reverse it! You will not completely stop having negative thoughts at first. They creep in and that is normal. Self-criticism and negative thoughts turn to negative energy which does no good for you on a physical, mental, emotional or energetic level. You will start to build an awareness of just how many negative thoughts you have each day, which may surprise you! As you recognize them, whenever any negative self chatter strikes you, immediately re-focus your attention to something positive. It is much easier to switch to a positive thought than it is to stop a negative one, so flip it! A positive thought carries 10x more energy than a negative thought so don’t get discouraged if you catch yourself being overly negative at first. That will change! And when it does you will start to notice changes in your mood, physical body and your environment.

40. Try something new...

And remember, the food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison.
See any habits on this list you could work on incorporating?
Are there any you’ve successfully made into habits? Did they help?
What would you add to the list?
Don’t wait one more day to make your health and well-being a priority. Make the choice to be healthy—right now.

What you need to know about Lassa Fever

Hi Dassyb blog readers, hope you are having a great week? Recently an outbreak of lassa fever is been reported in some parts of Nigeria. According to reports, the states affected include Bauchi, Nassarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo. The total number reported so far is 81 and 35 deaths, with a mortality rate of 43.2 per cent, a rate considered very high by all standards. Most people don't even know what it is. So this write up will shed a little bit of light on it.

Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever ( LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno State , Nigeria. Lassa fever is a member of the Arenaviridae virus family. Similar to ebola, clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen.
Lassa frequently infects people in West Africa . It results in 300,000 to 500,000 cases annually and causes about 5,000 deaths each year. Outbreaks of the disease have been observed in Nigeria, Liberia , Sierra Leone , Guinea, and the Central African Republic . The primary animal host of the Lassa virus is the Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis), an animal found in most of sub-Saharan Africa. The virus is probably transmitted by contact with the feces or urine of animals accessing grain stores in residences.Given its high rate of incidence, Lassa fever is a major problem in affected countries.

Transmission

Humans usually become infected with Lassa virus from exposure to urine or faeces of infected Mastomys rats. Lassa virus may also be spread between humans through direct contact with the blood, urine, faeces, or other bodily secretions of a person infected with Lassa fever. There is no epidemiological evidence supporting airborne spread between humans. Person-to-person transmission occurs in both community and health-care settings, where the virus may be spread by contaminated medical equipment, such as re-used needles. Sexual transmission of Lassa virus has been reported.

Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and both sexes. Persons at greatest risk are those living in rural areas where Mastomys are usually found, especially in communities with poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. Health workers are at risk if caring for Lassa fever patients in the absence of proper barrier nursing and infection control practices.

Signs and symptoms

In 80% of cases, the disease is asymptomatic , but in the remaining 20%, it takes a complicated course. The virus is estimated to be responsible for about 5,000 deaths annually. The fever accounts for up to one-third of deaths in hospitals within the affected regions and 10 to 16% of total cases.
After an incubation period of six to 21 days, an acute illness with multiorgan involvement develops. Nonspecific symptoms include fever, facial swelling, and muscle fatigue, as well as conjunctivitis and mucosal bleeding. The other symptoms arising from the affected organs are:

Gastrointestinal tract

Nausea
Vomiting (bloody)
Diarrhea (bloody)
Stomach ache
Constipation
Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
Hepatitis

Cardiovascular system

Pericarditis
Hypertension
Hypotension
Tachycardia (abnormally high heart rate)

Respiratory tract

Cough
Chest pain
Dyspnoea
Pharyngitis
Pleuritis

Nervous system

Encephalitis
Meningitis
Unilateral or bilateral hearing deficit
Seizures

Clinically, Lassa fever infections are difficult to distinguish from other viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Marburg, and from more common febrile illnesses such as malaria . The virus is excreted in urine for 3-9 weeks and in semen for three months.

Causes

Lassa virus is zoonotic (transmitted from animals), in that it spreads to humans from
rodents , specifically multimammate mice ( Mastomys natalensis ).This is probably the most common mouse in equatorial Africa, ubiquitous in human households and eaten as a delicacy in some areas. In these rodents , infection is in a persistent asymptomatic state. The virus is shed in their excreta (urine and feces), which can be aerosolized. In fatal cases, Lassa fever is characterized by impaired or delayed cellular immunity leading to
fulminant viremia.

Infection in humans typically occurs by exposure to animal excrement through the
respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts. Inhalation of tiny particles of infectious material (aerosol) is believed to be the most significant means of exposure. It is possible to acquire the infection through broken skin or mucous membranes that are directly exposed to infectious material. Transmission from person to person has also been established, presenting a disease risk for healthcare workers. Frequency of transmission by sexual contact has not been established.

Treatment and vaccines

The antiviral drug ribavirin seems to be an effective treatment for Lassa fever if given early on in the course of clinical illness. There is no evidence to support the role of ribavirin as post-exposure prophylactic treatment for Lassa fever.

When Lassa fever infects pregnant women late in their third trimester, induction of delivery is necessary for the mother to have a good chance of survival. This is because the virus has an affinity for the placenta and other highly vascular tissues. The fetus has only a one in ten chance of survival no matter what course of action is taken; hence, the focus is always on saving the life of the mother. Following delivery, women should receive the same treatment as other Lassa fever patients.
Work on a vaccine is continuing, with multiple approaches showing positive results in animal trials. There is currently no vaccine that protects against Lassa fever.

Prevention and control

Prevention of Lassa fever relies on promoting good “community hygiene” to discourage rodents from entering homes. Effective measures include storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from the home, maintaining clean households and keeping cats. Because Mastomys are so abundant in endemic areas, it is not possible to completely eliminate them from the environment. Family members should always be careful to avoid contact with blood and body fluids while caring for sick persons.
In health-care settings, staff should always apply standard infection prevention and control precautions when caring for patients, regardless of their presumed diagnosis. These include basic hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (to block splashes or other contact with infected materials), safe injection practices and safe burial practices.
Health workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Lassa fever should apply extra infection control measures to prevent contact with the patient’s blood and body fluids and contaminated surfaces or materials such as clothing and bedding. When in close contact (within 1 metre) of patients with Lassa fever, health-care workers should wear face protection (a face shield or a medical mask and goggles), a clean, non-sterile long-sleeved gown, and gloves (sterile gloves for some procedures).
Laboratory workers are also at risk. Samples taken from humans and animals for investigation of Lassa virus infection should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories.
On rare occasions, travellers from areas where Lassa fever is endemic export the disease to other countries. Although malaria, typhoid fever, and many other tropical infections are much more common, the diagnosis of Lassa fever should be considered in febrile patients returning from West Africa, especially if they have had exposures in rural areas or hospitals in countries where Lassa fever is known to be endemic. Health-care workers seeing a patient suspected to have Lassa fever should immediately contact local and national experts for advice and to arrange for laboratory testing.

Diagnosis

Because the symptoms of Lassa fever are so varied and non-specific, clinical diagnosis is often difficult, especially early in the course of the disease. Lassa fever is difficult to distinguish from other viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola virus disease; and many other diseases that cause fever, including malaria, shigellosis, typhoid fever and yellow fever.
Definitive diagnosis requires testing that is available only in specialized laboratories. Laboratory specimens may be hazardous and must be handled with extreme care. Lassa virus infections can only be diagnosed definitively in the laboratory using the following tests:

  • antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • antigen detection tests
  • reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay
  • virus isolation by cell culture.

Messi makes it 5 record ballon d'or wins

Hi Dassyb blog readers and football fans, the anticipated fifa ballon dor was hekd last night in zurich and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player for the fifth time. The 28-year-old Argentine had 41.33% of the vote, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo (27.76%) second and Barca's Neymar (7.86%) third.
Either Messi or Ronaldo, who became a three-time winner last year, have won the past eight awards.

United States midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, won the women's award.
England coach Mark Sampson was beaten to the women's football coach of the year award by USA boss Jill Ellis.

Messi's 2015 in numbers

61 games, 52 goals and 26 assists.
A goal every 101 minutes and an assist every 202 minutes.
Best minutes-per-goal rate - 80 - of anyone scoring a minimum of 10 goals across Europe's top five leagues during 2015.
Directly involved in 49 goals in La Liga - 34 scored and 15 assists - which was the joint-most with Ronaldo in 2015 across the top five European leagues.
Scored in all six club tournaments in 2015, as Barcelona won five of them.

Past Ballon d'Or winners

2014: Cristiano Ronaldo
2008: Cristiano Ronaldo
2013: Cristiano Ronaldo 2007: Kaka
2012: Lionel Messi  2006: Fabio Cannavaro
2011: Lionel Messi  2005: Ronaldinho
2010: Lionel Messi 2004: Andriy Shevchenko
2009: Lionel Messi 2003: Pavel Nedved

Ballon d'Or - world player of the yearLionel Messi extended his record haul of world player of the year awards with his fifth after winning the treble - La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League - with Barcelona in 2014-15.
Portugal captain Ronaldo, 30, scored 57 goals in as many games in 2015 - including a record 16 in the Champions League - but that was not enough to win him Ballon d'Or number four.
Barcelona striker Neymar, 23, was the first Brazilian to finish in the top three since Kaka won the 2007 award. He scored 45 goals in 62 games and is joint top scorer in this season's La Liga with 15, level with team-mate Luis Suarez.
"It's a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d'Or after seeing Cristiano win it," Messi said.
"It's incredible that it's my fifth... much more than anything I would have dreamed of as a kid."

Women's world player of the year

USA's World Cup-winning midfielder Carli Lloyd, 33, won the women's world player of the year award. She scored a hat-trick in the final against Japan, including a sensational strike from the halfway line, and earned the Golden Ball for best player in the tournament.
Former Germany striker Celia Sasic finished second despite retiring halfway through 2015 at the age of 27. She was top scorer in the World Cup with six goals and won the Champions League with Frankfurt. Japan midfielder Aya Miyama, 30, captained her country to the World Cup final, where they lost to the USA. She was third. None of the shortlisted trio had won the award before.
Lloyd said: "It has been a dream ever since I started with the national team. Keep your dreams and just go after them."

Fifa/Fifpro World XI

Real Madrid had as many players as Barcelona - four - in the world team of the year despite not winning a trophy. Madrid representatives included Ronaldo, Marcelo, Ramos and Modric while Barcelona's included Messi, Iniesta, Neymar and Alves.
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was the Bundesliga's only representative, while Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba and Paris St-Germain's Thiago Silva represented Serie A and Ligue 1 respectively.
The Premier League was the only one of Europe's top five leagues not to have anyone in the team.

World coach of the year - men's football

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique won the world coach of the year award after leading his side to five of the six trophies on offer in 2015, including the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
He beat Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, who was second, and Chile's Copa America-winning coach Jorge Sampaoli to the award.

World coach of the year - women's football

United States coach Jill Ellis was named women's football world coach of the year after leading her country to World Cup glory in the summer.
England coach Mark Sampson finished third with 10.68% of the vote after their third-place finish in Canada. Second was Japan coach Norio Sasaki, whose side beat England in the semi-finals, but lost to USA in the final.
"It is a true honour," said Ellis. "To Fifa, to our own federation, thank you for your belief, your vision and your investment in women's football."

Puskas award - goal of the year

Atletico Goianiense's Wendell Lira won the goal of the year award for his overhead kick against Goianesia in Brazil's Goiano state league.

Messi's run from halfway and finish in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao was second, with Roma full-back Alessandro Florenzi's 55-yard goal against Barca third.

Fair play award

Former Leeds and South Africa captain Lucas Radebe announced the winner of this year's fair play award. That went to every football club and organisation supporting refugees.

How the voting work?
Journalists, national team coaches and captains vote for their top three in all categories, apart from the Puskas and fair play ones.
They select their first, second and third choice for each award, with five, three and one points given to each place respectively.
The winner is the person with the most points. In the event of a tie, it goes to the player or coach with the most first places.
The Puskas award, for the "most beautiful goal" of 2015, is voted for by users of the Fifa and France Football websites.

Congrats to all winners especially Lionel Messi, well deserved!!!

Tips to creating healthy new habits this new year

Hi Dassyb blog readers, Happy new year!!! I found this somewhere online and thought its worth sharing. It’s the time of the year to dream about new healthy habits and commit to leaving behind negative patterns that don’t align with your true self. Many people promise to eat a healthier diet, start working out, read more, or watch less television, but only a few succeed in the long run. Use these tips to make sure your self-improvement goals become part of a regular lifestyle rather than great ideas that melt in the spring.

Set Clear Goals

When you set a goal, it should move you toward something you want, rather than away from something you don’t want. Energy flows where attention goes so put your attention on what you want instead of what you don’t. Be very specific. For example say, “I want to sit in full splits” instead of “I want to be more flexible.”
Make sure these clear goals are reasonable too. If you’re new to exercise, opt for a fun run of 1 or 2 miles rather than an Ironman. You can always work your way up to the big goals after you’ve had some initial success.

Don’t Change Everything at Once

Even if you recognize that both diet and lifestyle need radical change, prioritize your self-improvement goals. It’s like learning to juggle—you don’t start with six balls, you start with three and then add one at a time. Juggling three balls successfully feels way better than dropping six. And if it feels good, you’ll be motivated to keep going.

Maintain Your Momentum

If you set clear, realistic goals, you might feel like they are easy to achieve. That’s good! There’s no reason to make things more difficult for yourself and risk losing all the progress you’ve made. If things are going well on your diet, don’t reduce your calorie intake even more. If running once a day feels easy, don’t double your effort.
Instead, stick with what’s working and add in some rewards. When you get to the first month, treat yourself. If the reward is aligned with your intention, that’s even better. For example, if your goal is to spend time walking outside every day, buy yourself some new hiking shoes after a successful month.

Surround Yourself With Supportive People

When you make the decision to change a habit or create a different lifestyle, be prepared for potentially negative feedback from some of your friends. Some people may think that your choice to change is a poor reflection on their choice to remain the same.
The best thing you can do is spend time with people who inspire you to make positive choices. When you surround yourself with peers who celebrate your success, it will encourage your continued progress. You could also make new friends. If your goal is to start running, join a beginner’s running group. If your goal is to eat better, you could start a recipe-sharing club.

Remember That You Are Deserving

Even if you’re surrounded by great people, with a clear goal and built in rewards, the human tendency can be to let your personal wants and needs fall to the bottom of the list. After cooking, cleaning, and packing lunches for the entire family, your plans to go to the gym become easier to ignore. But just like flight attendants say, put on your oxygen mask before helping your children. You have to make sure your needs are met before you can take care of others. Seeing their parents model this same behavior, children begin to learn the value of voicing their opinions and taking care of their needs.

Be Gentle With Yourself

If you fall back into old patterns, instead of berating yourself, be grateful that you noticed. Wanting to change is the first step, so have gratitude that you recognize there is change to be made. If you fall off the horse, get back on and try again.

Thanks for reading and I hope all of this has been helpful, and remember never give up.

10 moments in sports that happened in 2015 to remember

Hi Dassyb blog readers, welcome to 2016. Several wonderful and shocking events occurred in 2015, below are few of them.  We watch for the moments -- the ones that make us cheer, laugh, cry or scream. Sports trigger emotions in a way few things in life can. If you think about it, this past year has been filled with incredible storylines that encompassed a wide array of feelings. We take at look at the biggest and most influential people, teams and moments that stuck with us through the year and remain as memories we'll never forget.

1. May weather and Pacquiao fight

Was this the most hyped sporting event in history? Probably. It was definitely the most lucrative, even if the quality of the boxing was not what everyone had hoped for.
One of the things a disproportionate number of fans had been looking forward to was seeing Floyd Mayweather Jr finally get put on his backside in a boxing ring.
The convicted domestic abuser is near the top of every 'most hated athletes' list and Manny Pacquiao was the man charged with the difficult task of ending his unbeaten run, but it wasn't to be.

Pacquiao threw a fraction of his usual punch tally and later revealed he was battling through a busted shoulder, allowing Mayweather to dominate in his usual manner.
The American, who some believe avoided fighting Pacquiao until the hard-hitting Filipino icon was past his prime, was simply too fast for his opponent and constantly caught him on the counter-attack.
Some argued Mayweather's win by unanimous decision was unfair to the more aggressive Pacquiao, but those cries were coming more from the heart than the head.

2. Fifa corruption scandal

In late May, Swiss police stormed into a Zurich hotel and arrested nine people, all of them current or former FIFA officials.
It kicked off a global investigation that was still not enough to stop Sepp Blatter getting re-elected as president, though he since promised to resign and was suspended, along with possible successor and UEFA president Michel Platini.
Blatter and Platini eventually copped eight-year bans over a US$2 million payment the FIFA boss made to his UEFA counterpart in 2011.

Nothing's impossible as this saga wears on, but long-whispered rumours about alleged FIFA corruption are now coming home to roost.
Claims of dodgy broadcast deals and questionable tournament bids abound and the whole sordid mess has been a depressing sideshow to any actual sport that may have been enjoyed.

3. Fanning powers through pain

Mick Fanning was within touching distance of his fourth world title on the eve of his round-three heat at Pipe Masters in Hawaii.
But his stoic exterior masked his devastation as hours earlier, Fanning had received the news that his older brother, Peter, had died in his sleep.
He surfed a brilliant heat to remain in the hunt and, while he ultimately fell short of the title, he once again earned worldwide respect and admiration for his strength and skill.
It was the second time the surfing star had to deal with such a tragedy, after a friend and another brother, Sean, died in a car accident in 1998.
fight
lso, a scary moment turned into a highlight when surfer Mick Fanning encountered a shark in the water during the final of a surfing competition in South Africa. The shark knocked Fanning off the board, but the surfer managed to punch the shark and swim to safety.

4. Kobe Bryant announces retirement

With the injuries piling up and his skills deteriorating, Lakers icon Kobe Bryant decided it was time to go after 20 seasons in the NBA. He announced the retirement in his own poetic words and embarked on a farewell tour. That last hurrah hasn’t always been pretty, but Kobe continues to play with the never-say-never approach that defined his career.

5. Barcelona caps off a success year with 5 trophies from a possible 6.

After winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey, Barcelona finished off its second treble in six years by beating Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League final in Berlin. The front line of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez became the world's most prolific, and the latter two scored the clinching goals. In September they went on to win the European super cup against sevilla and lost the Spanish super cup to athletic Bilbao. They ended the year with a comfortable 4 nil win over river plate in to win the club world cup.

6. Curry breaks a 40 year drought and brings the golden warriors a title

The return of LeBron James to Cleveland was quietly, and quickly, usurped by Steph Curry turning his Warriors turning into the NBA’s top attraction. Curry took home the MVP and won a title, then led the Warriors on a record 24-game winning streak to open the 2015-16 season. The team now stands at 28-1, Curry is scoring 30.8 ppg (2.4 points more than his next closest competitor) and for as long as Golden State keeps up its high level of play, every game is a must watch as that 72-10 record from the 1995-96 Bulls looks evermore in danger of falling.

7. Klitschko dethroned by Fury Tyson

Fury ended Wladimir Klitschko’s tenure as the world heavyweight champion following a unanimous decision by the judges. With the victory, Fury inherited the WBA, IBF and WBO titles. He is poised to face Klitschko in a rematch next year.

8. Serena Williams captures second serena Slam with victory at Wimbledon

No. 1 Serena Williams took down Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and her sister Venus en route to the 2015 Wimbledon final, where she beat Spain's Garbine Muguruza to win her sixth title at the All England Club and 21st Grand Slam overall. The win also marked Serena’s fourth consecutive major title—the second “Serena Slam” of her career—and at 33, she became the oldest women’s Slam champion in the Open Era.

9. Ledecky record breaking year

The first swimmer to win the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle events at the FINA World Championships, Ledecky won five gold medals and set three world records before being named the 2015 Female Swimmer of the Meet

10. Lewis Hamilton championship win

Lewis Hamilton's 2015 title triumph will be remembered as the most routine of the three currently to his name. Having ended his six-year wait for a title at the 2014 Abu Dhabi finale, Hamilton has made light work of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in a way he was unable to last season and wrapped up the championship with three races to spare.

Happy new year and I hope we see more wonderful and interesting sports highlights.
